The Morgan Arts Council marks the start of its 30th year “getting art out there”
with its hometown of Berkeley Springs firmly entrenched in the top 10 art
destinations in America for small cities and towns. In previous years, Berkeley
Springs has been ranked as high as #12 competing against all size locations and
now is #6 following such notable art towns as Sante Fe and Asheville rated first
and second respectively. The list is compiled by American Style magazine
from votes cast by the public. “This is the fifth year Berkeley Springs has been
nationally ranked,” said Jeanne Mozier, local arts promoter. “No other West
Virginia town made the list,” she said pointing out that Berkeley Springs is
also the state’s first and only certified arts community.
The upsurge in
cultural tourism continues with travelers rating arts, heritage and cultural
activities as one of the top five reasons for traveling. In West Virginia,
requests for information about cultural tourism is paramount according to state
travel officials. “Travel Berkeley Springs has always recognized the importance
of our area’s reputation as an arts community,” said Sally Marshall, president
of the local travel group. “We are ardent supporters of all the good work MAC
does in bringing people to Berkeley Springs,” she said citing activities
including the annual summer series of concerts in Berkeley Springs State Park
and regular gallery shows opened with Artwalks.
The Morgan Arts Council
has received public support for its efforts according to Mozier. “MAC has been
funded by both Morgan County and the town of Bath from hotel/motel tax
revenues,” said Mozier. “Without this public funding, and grants from the West
Virginia Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts,
Berkeley Springs would not be the hot art town it is and the local economy would
not be benefitting from art sales and visitors who come for the art.” She
pointed out that many of the county’s new residents come here because of the
rich cultural life of the area especially its art scene.
Mozier
explained that while MAC is the primary community organization developing the
arts, there are other activities that contribute to the reputation of Berkeley
Springs including the Community Concert band, spring and fall art studio tours
and arts-related businesses not to mention a thriving group of more than 150
working artists.
