COMEDY OPENS ON STAGE IN BERKELEY SPRINGS

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ---- The Nerd, a rollicking comedy set in 1980s Terre Haute, Indiana, opens at the Ice House in Berkeley Springs on Friday, June 8 at 7:30pm for a two weekend, seven-show run. The Ice House Theater Project production features an ensemble cast of seven all drawn from regulars of the performance group. Larry Shue's famous comedy promises to amuse audiences from the opening scene.

"It's one of the funniest plays I've ever seen or done," reported director, Margi Griffiths. "I need to warn people -- it is wet-your-pants funny."

Among the cast is Alex Ivy who fits his part as if Larry Shue wrote it for him. Natalie Smith is as perky as ever in the role of the Washington weathergirl. Abbie Brown and Sandy Bienen give insight into snobbery and its effects in dazzling comic portrayals while Henry Hickerson is the main heartthrob as the gentle Willem. Daniel Wolfe promises to be the character the audience loves to hate in his depiction of the sophisticated, cynical drama critic. Rhiannon Griffiths continues the Williams family theater dynasty into a third generation performing as a whining, horrendously spoiled teenage brat.

"We were almost sorry to know that the play is ready to put on stage and rehearsals will soon be over," said Griffiths. "It has been so much fun. The greatest challenge for all the actors has been to play it straight and keep from cracking up over the great dialogue and wildly funny situations," said Griffiths.

Technical activities are under the direction of Brice Williams who has an adept crew of youngsters, all under the age of 18. "Not only is Brice doing his usual first-rate job of designing and building sets and developing all the other tech aspects," said Griffiths, "but he is training another generation in the theater arts."

Additional performances of The Nerd are scheduled for Saturdays, June 9 and 16 at 7:30pm; Sundays, June 10 and 17 at 3pm, and Friday, June 15 at 7:30pm. In addition, there is a Thursday, June 14 performance at 7pm that is pay-what-you-can. For reservations, call the Ice House theater hotline at 304-258-2300 selection 2.

Produced by the Morgan Arts Council (MAC), The Nerd is sponsored by BB&T. "We're pleased to be welcoming a new business friend to the MAC family," said Griffiths. "I know they will be thrilled to have everyone talking about how funny the play is that they are sponsoring."

The Ice House is located at Independence and Mercer in downtown Berkeley Springs.
