FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- 10/24/08 Berkeley Springs, WV—The award-winning Morgan Arts Council hosts the first-ever Art & Elegance, a gala evening on Saturday, November 8 to benefit the Ice House capital campaign. The art deco themed event is at the historic Country Inn in downtown Berkeley Springs. Radio and television personality Mike Cuthbert is emcee for the evening. Music for dancing is provided by the Sultans of Swing.
Highlight of the evening is the unique Art Tombola where attendees use their gala ticket as part of a lottery that allows them to choose from pieces of art worth collectively more than $27,000 with some individual pieces valued at more than $1000.00 “Not only do guests get an exciting evening of music, dancing and tasty food but they go home with a piece of art from local artists and their friends,” says Denise Bergen, one of the event organizers and vice president of the Morgan Arts Council. (MAC) “And some of that art is worth five times their ticket price.”
Bergen invites people to see the art in advance. “It’s all hanging on display now at the Ice House,” she says. “It’s really amazing.” The art can also be seen online by going to www.macicehouse,org and clicking on “Art & Elegance”. The evening of the gala, guests will view the art hanging in the Country Inn gallery as well as in a printed catalog. The catalog includes pictures of each piece of art, the name of the piece, medium, the artist’s name. “We’ll be drawing ticket holders’ names at random three times during the evening,” explains Bergen. “Then they get to choose from the art. We keep going until all the art is selected.” Guests can meet the artists at a special champagne reception at 7pm.
Guests also may participate in three drawings throughout the evening with prizes worth almost $1500 each ranging from golf to spa weekends. “We want everyone to enjoy the best Berkeley Springs has to offer,” says Bob Marggraf, another event organizer.
Berkeley Springs has a vibrant arts community and was recently named by American Style Magazine as the #7 art destination in America among small cities and towns. The artists whose work is included in the Tombola are among the best in the country.
The event is designed to raise funds for development of new arts spaces at the Ice House. MAC owns the Ice House and continues to develop it as a community art center. MAC supports and produces arts programs for the Berkeley Springs community, local and visitors, including more than 300,000 art experiences for youth and adults. The Ice House provides arts space for everything from classes and workshops to gallery shows and community theater productions.
“Whether we are producing a fundraising evening like Art and Elegance or scheduling after-school classes, MAC is always working to fulfill its mission of getting art out there,” says Bergen.
