MONEY AVAILABLE FOR ARTIST BUSINESS TRAINING

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ----- The Morgan Arts Council (MAC) announced three sources of funding to assist artists with a year-long series of business training classes to be held at the Ice House in Berkeley Springs. The initial class is scheduled for September 20.

Two of the sources are available for Morgan County artists only. One source offers a 50% match for tuition for one or more classes directly from the arts council for which artists may apply by calling 258-2300 or emailing info at macicehouse.org. The second source for local artists is from the local F.A.S.T. Foundation for which artists may apply by contacting wemlands@att.net.

FAST's priority is to advance informal education of individuals in Morgan County to apply arts, sciences and technologies in their daily lives.  "We're delighted that the training of artists to enhance their work meets FAST's important goal," said Jeanne Mozier who is chairing the Artist Business Training project. "FAST is to be applauded for their work in Morgan County."

The third source is available to any West Virginia artist who is a veteran of military service and can be obtained by contacting David Ranck of WV Workforce Job Training at dranck@workforcewv.org.

All information about the schedule of classes which occur once a month in September, October, November, March, April and May, and an application form are available on the MAC Website; www.macicehouse.org.

The first class is Thursday, September 20 from 2 to 5pm and Friday, September 9:30am to 12:30pm. It is a practical guide to entrepreneurship and profitable pricing for artists and artisans taught by Rebecca Stelling.

"This first class is one no visual artist should miss," said Mozier. "Rebecca virtually invented marketing West Virginia visual arts in the mid-1970s when she founded her company Mountain Artisans along with Sharon Rockefeller. Since then she developed the Shop at the Cultural Center and the sales program at Tamarack. Through all this work for other artists, she has also continued to do and market her own art."

Registration is required for the various classes and can be done online or by calling MAC as indicated above.

The Artist Business Training project is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
