JAZZ FOR EVERYONE AT SUMMER CONCERT IN PARK
BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ---- Professor Joshua Davis brings four of New York’s best traveling jazz musicians to Berkeley Springs State Park on Saturday, August 13 at 5:30pm. Rain location for the Morgan Arts Council’s summer concert series is the nearby Ice House.
Led by Davis who is both a bassist and composer, this band brings a balance of lyricism and ferocity to a modern jazz interpretation of an impressive array of musical greats. The group “covers” in a jazz way everyone from Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye and Beethoven to Tchaikovsky, The Police and Earth, Wind, and Fire. They also play their own original music and a forever-evolving list of other artists.
A graduate composer, Davis is on the faculty of Susquehanna University as Director of Jazz Studies. He directs the university’s Big Band in addition to teaching. His group has two CDs. Performing with Davis at the summer concerts are Ole Mathisen on saxophone; Vardan Ovsepian, keyboard; Natalie John, voice and Kevin Lowe, drums.
“We are always looking for connection,” said Davis. “We play groovy grooves and recognizable themes in and around our own writing and interpretation.” At 4:30pm, the group stages a workshop shaped by the “Music Doctor” Davis where they explain and play their way through “how jazz works.”
This concert is funded in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and West Virginia Commission on the Arts as well as hotel/motel tax from the town and county. Funding is also provided by the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour program.
