Origami, Paper Engineering Workshops Scheduled for Ice House

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ----Origami artist David Kandel, author Carol Barton and fiber artist Mary Klotz offer December workshops at the Ice House in conjunction with the Morgan Arts Council's special gallery exhibit: "Rare Alignment."  The exhibit hangs through January 8.

Kandel teaches a double header on Sunday.  From 10m to noon, the Baltimore artist teaches Explorations in Origami Fabric Folding, showing how to manipulate textures and organize patterns in fabric, inspired by origami processes. Kandel’s work in folded and pleated fabric, secured with handstitching is sometimes similar to smocking.  These techniques relate to textile, origami, and paper engineering explorations.  From 2-4pm, he introduces recent innovations in origami involving new diagraming of crease patterns and repeat pattern tilings, all on a single, uncut sheet of paper in Introduction to Paper Tesselations.

Fiber artist Mary Klotz targets holiday needs with her Paper 3D Sampler on Monday from noon to 3pm.  Klotz's workshop is "make and take" sampling sliceforms, kirigami pop-up words and a pop up holiday card.  Klotz is curator of the current show.

On Sunday, December 11 from 10am to 4pm, there is a rare opportunity to learn Pop-up Paper Structures from Carol Barton of Glen Echo, MD  author of "The Pocket Paper Engineer 1 & 2."   Barton presents a systematic exploration of basic on-the-fold pop-up structures, progressing through a series of three-dimensional constructions for decorations, invitations and cards for the holidays and year round.

"Rare Alignment" is an exhibit of art embodying the elegance of underlying mathematics. The show opened 11-11-11 and runs through Sunday January 8, 2012. Gallery hours Saturday and Sunday 11-5 at the Ice House Gallery in Berkeley Springs.
