RARE ALIGNMENT Show Opens at Ice House Gallery
BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ----Inspired by the 11-11-11 date for opening night of the gallery show at the Ice House, curator Mary Klotz assembled Rare Alignment, a tribute to the underlying mathematics in various art forms. The artist reception opens the show at 7:30pm after an Art Walk that begins at 5pm at Mountain Laurel Gallery. Rare Alignment is produced by the Morgan Arts Council. The show hangs through January 8, 2012.
Klotz is a one-woman art department, creating work in more than a dozen media from rug hooking and painted silk to raku and glass. Several of her pieces are in the show. “I created this exhibit for all the people who notice when numbers line up on their digital clocks or car odometers, and for all lovers of origami, kaleidoscopes and astronomy,” she said. Rare Alignment was the obvious title when Klotz realized the opening date was a calendar eclipse. “There is only one more in our lifetime,” she explained. “12-12-12.”
Nearly a dozen nationally exhibited artists from both coasts and Texas have work in the show capturing patterns and forms in various media. International award-winning Jane Kostik turns geometry into puzzles and sculpture toys. Ed Noyce works on the computer creating fractals which he then prints onto silk banners. One of Noyce’s spectacular images serves as the show’s invitation postcard. “Ed was one of the first artists I approached about the show,” said Klotz. “Complicated mathematical patterns are the heart of his work.”
Other items in the show include three-dimensional bead weaving from Jessica Beels and beadwork boxes from Julia Pretl as well as stupefying optical images in acrylic from Doug Moulden. Paper art forms include architectural paper cutting from Laura Cooperman, origami from David Kandel and embossed paper assemblages from Sandy Jackson.
In addition to having her work in the show, prolific paper artist, author and Corcoran School of Art faculty member, Carol Barton schedules a daylong workshop at the Ice House on Sunday, December 11. Students learn basic paper engineering techniques to create pop-ups, holiday ornaments and other elaborate and decorative paper items. “It is a rare opportunity to have Carol teach this class here,” said Klotz.
Funding for the gallery shows is provided in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, WV Commission on the Arts and hotel tax funds from Morgan County and the town of Bath. For more information, call 304-258-2300 or check online at www.macicehouse.org.
