PUSS 'N BOOTS STAGED BY THEATER CAMP KIDS
BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ----
The Morgan Arts Council’s (MAC) youth theater camp project is completed with a staged performance of the beloved fairy tale, Puss ‘n Boots.“In just two weeks, these children have put together a very funny show,” said Margi Griffiths, theater camp director.
The hour-long production is staged at Berkeley Springs High School auditorium on Friday, July 1 at 7pm and Saturday July 2 at 2pm. There are no reservations; tickets are available at the door.
More than 30 children from 4 to 14 have been learning both on stage and back stage skills at the Ice House during the two week camp. “All the parts are played by campers,” said Griffiths. "We have actors trying out all different kinds of accents: Russian, French, British and even a little Cajun.”
Older campers are learning stage management and directing as well as mentoring the younger actors. “These teens have grown up in our program,” said Mary Hott, MAC’s Executive Director. “During camp, they get to step aside and coach the younger ones so they can get stage experience too.”
One grown-up MAC theater camper is Ashley Shade who is staging Sam Shepard’s Fool For Love at the Ice House July 8, 9 and 10. Shade graduated from West Virginia University’s theater program this year and Fool is her senior project. Another Berkeley Springs native “paying back” the program with hopes the current kids will learn to do the same is Scott Frederick who provided scholarships for three campers.
Additional funding for the Ice House Youth Theater Camp is provided by the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
