ART SHOW GOES TO THE DOGS IN BERKELEY SPRINGS
Stained glass by Beverly Kipphan

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ---- "Putting on the Dog" opens at the Ice House
Gallery on Friday, July 16 with an Artwalk that begins at 5pm. The
opening reception for the show starts at 7:30pm. Curated by Lynn
Lavin and produced by the Morgan Arts Council, the show hangs through
September 5. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

The Artwalk includes a reception at Mountain Laurel Gallery from 5 to
7:30pm and a Doggie Tea Party (with treats for people, too) at Nature
Niche also starting at 5pm.

More than two dozen artists use a full range of media to capture how
they connect with dogs -- their own and others. Among the items
showcased are dog puppets and dogs sculpted or capture in clay, glass,
fabric and on canvas. Lavin calls herself a dog in people form and
has her own dog-themed pottery in the show. "I like giving them their
personality," she said about her work. As a special creation to
symbolize the theme, Lavin is creating a totem pole featuring three
dogs with the one at the peak wearing a top hat.

Among the works of art on sale are Irene Taylor's dog clothes, Kathy
Edwards sculptures in clay and framed original cartoons by John De
Amicis. Janet Salter and Angela Bell both are available to do
portraits of a pet dog and have samples hanging in the show. Laura
Gough's quilts feature dogs and noted local quilter, Rika Bennett,
stitched a wall hanging of sheepdogs. Among Lavin's favorites is Beverly
Kipphan's stained glass panel portraying Lavin's heepdog, Patches.
It is featured on the show's announcement postcard along with a painting by Earle Andrews, Massimo Righini's sculpture and a clay piece by Jane Kelly Morais. "It's a show no dog lover can resist," said Lavin.

"Putting on the Dog" is funded in part by the National Endowment for
the Arts, West Virginia Commission on the Arts and hotel taxes from
town and county. The Ice House is located at Independence and Mercer
in downtown Berkeley Springs. For more information call 304-258-2300
