SEE A PLAY- WIN A QUILT
BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV ---- Marrying quilts with staged readings of
local plays, the Morgan Arts Council presents Piecework on Mothers Day
weekend at the Ice House in Berkeley Springs. For the fourth year,
local writers and actors offer three one-act staged readings featuring
quilts. Local quilters, in turn, create a pair of small quilts to go
with each play. Audience member tickets provide both admission to a
performance and a chance on winning one of the quilts.
"The Devil Does the Salsa" is an inventive and humorous play by Sally
Brinkman with James Worley reading the title role. Also reading are
Sharon Carpenter-Rose, Jane McCloud and Jacque Delbaugh. Bea
Jakubowski wrote another installment of the popular comic birding
adventures of Betty and Donna called "Search of the Yellow-Winged
Warbler." Readers are Sharon Carpenter-Rose, Jane McCloud, Tim
Smailes and Jacque Delbaugh. "Mothers of Invention" is this year's
play by Maureen Mylander read by Kaiti Larue, Nativa Kesecker and
Desiree Rose.
"The mini-quilts are as exciting as the plays," said Abbie Brown who
directs the project. Joyce Bancroft and Mary Myers made the quilt for
"Devil," Tamar Wallace and Jane Frenke made "Mothers of Invention,"
and Marilyn Moser and Barbara Lynn for "Warbler."
Showtimes for Piecework are Saturday, May 8 at 7:30pm and Sunday, May
9 at 3pm. Three quilts will be chanced off to the audience each day.
Additional tickets for the quilts may be purchased. No reservations
are being taken for the shows and seating is on a first come basis.
Piecework is the theatrical part of Berkeley Springs' immersion into
quilts during the month of May. In addition to the staged readings,
people can see the annual Delectable Mountains Quilt Show and Sale at
the Ice House Gallery every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm
throughout the month. In addition, there are 42 Yard Square quilts
hanging in businesses and public buildings around town. These quilts
are to be auctioned live at 2pm on Sunday, May 30 at the Ice House.
