WRITING A PLAY
Playwriting workshop with noted playwrite, poet and master teacher --
Grace Cavalieri.
Monday, January 18, 2-4pm;
Tuesday, January 19, 10am-
noon.
This allows time for "homework."
People work on their plays and then return for critique and polishing:
Tuesday, February 9, 2-4pm and
Wednesday, February 10, 10am to
noon.
Cost $75. 8 hours in four days.
Registration limited. Grace asks that participants begin outlining their play ideas NOW and
come to class ready to mold them into shape. Although no experience
in playwriting is required, remedial writing is not part of the
curriculum. Experience with theater as director, actor or playwrite,
is helpful. Grace makes herself available for individual coaching as
part of the process. Attached is a note on Elements of Playwriting
that notes some of the points to be covered in the workshop.

Grace Cavalieri is the author of ten books of poetry. Forthcoming is Cuffed Frays (Argonne House Press.) Her plays include off-Broadway productions. She's also written texts and lyrics performed for opera, television and film. She has adapted her latest book Pinecrest Rest Haven (Word Works Press) for stage and it premiers March 15,2001 at the Common Basis Theatre in NYC.
Grace teaches poetry workshops throughout the country at numerous colleges. As Resident Poet in Tuscany, she directs the workshops, for the Word Works annual Writer's Retreat. She produced and hosted "The Poet and the Poem," weekly on WPFW-FM (1977-97) presenting 2,000 poets to the nation in 20 years. She now presents this series once a year from the Library of Congress via NPR satellite.
Grace has received the Pen-Fiction Award, the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Silver Medal, and awards from the National Commission of Working Women, the American Association of University Women, plus others. She received the inaugural Columbia Merit Award for "significant contribution to poetry." Grace has enjoyed the kindness of many writing grants and fellowships. She is married to the sculptor Kenneth Flynn. They have four grown daughters. |

Simple pieces of heavy paper are transformed into three dimensional greetings:
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, HoHoHo, Noel
These can be the base for intricate art pieces, or just the best greeting cards you will ever give. Fascinating, delightful, unusual and inexpensive to make. Ready-to-cut pieces provided to make 4 different cards. Learn how to cut and fold, select papers, set up and design these cards, and see how they relate to other pop up mechanisims. The pieces can be embellished with printing, paint, glitter, stamping, stickers and embossing. Requires fine motor skills and focus (use of sharp knives required). Participants must sign a hold harmless release. All supplies provided (bring your glasses)

This evening workshop for adults will be an informal, in-the-round session with a focus on lyric writing, intended for both aspiring and seasoned songwriters. I'll discuss several different songwriting techniques, illustrating with original tunes. If time permits, we'll do a short songwriting exercise, too. You need not play an instrument to write songs (I don't), but feel free to bring your guitar along if you want to! Part of the Back to our Roots program.
